Corning has confirmed its latest generation of glass composite, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, is coming to Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series first.

“Our next generation of Galaxy flagship smartphones are the first devices to use Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, offering better durability and improved sustainability at the same time,” said Stephanie Choi, executive vice president, and chief marketing officer, Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics.

In Corning’s press release, the company announced that the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is coming to Samsung’s next Galaxy Flagship smartphones, which is the upcoming Galaxy S23 series. Expect the implementation of the Victus 2 on the Galaxy S23 series to be similar to the Galaxy S22 series, which saw both back and front protection.

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 was announced last year, and builds upon its previous glass formulation, offering improved drop performance against rough surfaces like concrete while preserving the scratch resistance of the first Gorilla Glass Victus.

According to Corning, the new glass composite can survive drops of up to one meter (around 3 feet) on a surface replicating concrete, and up to 2 meters (around 6.5 feet) on surfaces that replicate asphalt.

In contrast, competing aluminosilicate glass fails when dropped from half a meter or less on similar hard and rough surfaces.

Meanwhile, Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S23 series during its annual Unpacked event on February 2, 2 a.m., Philippine time.
