No RFID, no load? Prepare to pay fines on tollways starting August 31

Motorists who use the tollways without an RFID sticker or forget to top up their accounts will face penalties starting August 31, the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) announced.

TRB, in a joint effort with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Land Transportation Office (LTO), issued Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2024-001 on August 1. This mandates all motorists to secure an RFID sticker for their vehicles and maintain sufficient balance to cover toll fees.

Fines for Non-Compliance:

  • No RFID:
    • First offense: Php 1,000
    • Second offense: Php 2,000
    • Third offense and onwards: Php 5,000
  • Insufficient Load:
    • First offense: Php 500
    • Second offense: Php 1,000
    • Third offense and onwards: Php2,500

TRB hopes this move will significantly improve traffic flow at toll plazas. Currently, 9% of motorists lack RFID tags or have insufficient load, causing delays and inconveniencing the compliant 91%.

The implementation of the JMC aims to achieve a smoother and faster traffic flow at toll plazas, ultimately saving motorists time, money, and resources.
