Tumblr announced plans to move its massive user base to the WordPress platform. Automattic, the parent company of both platforms, will see over half a billion blogs transition to a new WordPress-powered backend.
To be clear, this doesn’t mean Tumblr is getting a major WordPress makeover. It will just run Tumblr blogs on WordPress.
“We’re not talking about changing Tumblr. We’re not turning Tumblr into WordPress. That would defeat the purpose,” Automattic said in a blog post. “We’re talking about running Tumblr’s backend on WordPress. You won’t even notice a difference from the outside.”
Moreover, Tumblr will benefit from the collective work of the WordPress project, while WordPress will benefit from the tools and creativity invested in Tumblr.
“Running Tumblr on WordPress will make it easier to share our work across platforms. We can build something once and bring it to both WordPress and Tumblr. We can run Tumblr on the rock-solid infrastructure behind WordPress.com,” the company adds.
Automattic did not provide any timeline or roadmap for the migration. The company acquired Tumblr in 2019, aiming to revitalize the platform.
