Netflix continues to expand its anime library with the addition of Hayao Miyazaki’s acclaimed film, The Boy and the Heron. The fantasy adventure will be available for streaming on the platform starting October 7, 2024, excluding Japan and the United States.
The Oscar-winning and Golden Globe-winning The Boy and the Heron is Miyazaki’s first feature film in a decade.
The hand-drawn animation, set during the war in Japan, tells the story of Mahito, a boy who loses his mother in a fire. As he moves to the countryside, he’s drawn into a mysterious world filled with talking herons, seven old women, and other intriguing characters.
Netflix has been steadily growing its collection of Studio Ghibli films. Through its partnership with Goodfellas and GKIDS, the streaming giant currently offers 22 Studio Ghibli titles to its members worldwide (excluding Japan and the United States).
This year alone, Netflix has added Suzume, The First Slam Dunk, and Grave of the Fireflies (September 16) to its lineup.
