A new Godzilla film is officially on the way. Toho confirmed the news in an “EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT” post on X.
Renowned filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, the writer, director, and VFX supervisor of the critically acclaimed Godzilla Minus One, will direct the upcoming film.

The announcement comes as the world celebrates Godzilla’s 70th anniversary on November 3, marking the day the original film premiered in Japan in 1954.
It’s no surprise that Toho wanted to continue the Godzilla franchise. Godzilla Minus One was a global box office success, grossing over $115 million worldwide. The film’s compelling story and groundbreaking visual effects were recognized internationally, culminating in multiple awards, including the 2024 Oscar for Best Achievement Visual Effects.
While it’s unclear whether the new Godzilla film will be a direct sequel to Minus One. However, the open-ended nature of the latter’s ending hints at a possible connection.
