Instagram launches Edits to challenge TikTok’s CapCut

Instagram has officially launched Edits, a standalone video editing app targeting content creators and positioning itself as a direct competitor to TikTok’s popular CapCut. Originally announced in January, Edits aims to offer a more comprehensive toolset beyond simple editing.

The app boasts features like AI-powered animations generated from static images, green screen replacement, and subject cutouts. It supports longer camera captures of up to 10 minutes, offers high-quality video outputs, and direct sharing to Instagram and Facebook.

Edits also includes project management features that allow users to track notes, organize ideas, and monitor video performance data.

Instagram has also teased future updates, including keyframes, advanced AI tools, enhanced text animations, and collaborative editing capabilities.

The timing of Edits’ launch came as TikTok and CapCut were temporarily removed from US app stores earlier this year. Both apps have since received a reprieve from the ban.

Edits is now available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Stay tuned for more tech news.
