Apple removes apps associated with ByteDance, amid TikTok ban

In the wake of the recent TikTok ban in the US, Apple has removed several other apps associated with ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok. This move comes as the company complies with the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.”

In a new support document, Apple said they are legally obligated to comply with US laws, including the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.”

This means apps from ByteDance and its subsidiaries — including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and others — will no longer be available for download or updates on the US App Store.

The affected apps are:

  • TikTok
  • TikTok Studio
  • TikTok Shop Seller Center
  • CapCut
  • Lemon8
  • Hypic
  • Lark – Team Collaboration
  • Lark – Rooms Display
  • Lark Rooms Controller
  • Gauth: AI Study Companion
  • MARVEL SNAP

For US users, these apps will remain installed on their devices. However, they cannot be redownloaded if deleted or restored on a new device. In-app purchases and new subscriptions are also no longer possible.

Even foreign visitors using Apple IDs from other countries won’t be able to access these apps while within US borders.

So, what happens next? We’ll have to wait and see when the new administration takes over in a couple of days. President-elect Donald Trump has said he will give TikTok a 3-month break from the ban once he takes office.
