TikTok is planning to release a new app just for users in the United States. The move is part of its effort to comply with legislation that requires TikTok to either sell its US operations or face a nationwide ban.
The new app is expected to launch on September 5, 2025. After that, the current version of TikTok will be removed from US app stores. People who already have the app will be able to use it for a while, but it’s expected to stop working by March 2026. Users should switch to the new app before that deadline.
Details about the new app are still under wraps. However, it’s expected to run separately from the global version.
This change comes as US lawmakers continue to raise concerns about TikTok’s ties to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Officials are worrying about how it handles user data or whether or not it could pose a national security risk.
In June, President Donald Trump said that a group of “very wealthy people” is preparing to acquire TikTok’s US operations. Although no names of the potential buyers have been shared, more updates are expected soon.
In any case, any deal would likely need approval from the Chinese government, since ByteDance still owns TikTok. The platform currently has over 170 million users in the US, making it one of the most popular social media apps in the country.
What happens next? That depends on how this progresses. Stay tuned.
