Blue Prince is now the Game of the Year at the Indie Game Awards after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was disqualified for using AI-generated assets.
Expedition 33 originally took home the award, but organizers later confirmed the game included an AI-made poster that slipped into the final release. The developers admitted it was supposed to be removed before launch. Even though it was patched out quickly, the rules of the Indie Game Awards clearly ban AI use, which led to the disqualification.
With Expedition 33 out, Blue Prince stepped in as the new Game of the Year. The Debut Game award went to Sorry We’re Closed. The decision has stirred up plenty of discussion online.
AI in gaming has become a hot topic. Many studios already use it for things like NPC behavior, productivity tools, or placeholder art.
Critics argue that it takes away jobs and originality, while supporters believe it can speed up development and cut costs. The controversy around Expedition 33 shows how divided the industry still is on where AI fits in.
