AI image generators are supposed to be creative, but a new study shows they often stick to the same 12 photo styles. Instead of giving endless variety, these tools fall back on familiar looks like studio portraits, product shots, landscapes, and documentary-style images.
Researchers say this happens because the systems rely heavily on patterns from their training data. So even if you change prompts, the results often look similar across different platforms.
This raises a few concerns. It could limit originality in digital art and design. It also points to bias in the datasets, since certain aesthetics get repeated more than others. For industries like advertising or media, that lack of diversity might be a problem.
The good news is that users can still push past these defaults. Prompt engineering, basically writing more specific or creative instructions, can help generate unique results. But it takes effort to break the mold.

AI image generators are powerful, no doubt. Still, this study is a reminder that they’re not limitless.
