A bill has been proposed to stop kids under 16 from using social media in the Philippines. CIBAC Representative Eddie Villanueva has filed House Bill No. 8262, also called the Social Media Protection for Minors Act.
The bill wants to put the responsibility on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube to enforce the age limit. Villanueva said the measure is meant to protect young people from online risks such as addiction, harmful content, and exploitation.
Studies have shown that heavy social media use can affect mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. A Pew Research Center survey in 2023 found that 32 percent of American teens believe social media has a mostly negative effect on their age group.
Other countries have already taken similar steps. Australia banned social media for users under 16 in 2024. China has strict rules for minors under 18, while Indonesia and Malaysia passed their own laws in 2026.

If approved, the Philippines would join a growing list of nations limiting social media access for minors.
