DICT considers banning Telegram in the Philippines

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is looking into the possibility of banning Telegram in the Philippines. The agency raised concerns about the app being used for illegal gambling and child exploitation.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said that while authorities have already cracked down on gambling websites, operators are now moving to encrypted apps like Telegram. He added that child exploitation is a serious issue and that failure to stop it could force regulators to block the platform.

Telegram is popular among crypto communities, startups, and trading groups in the country. Many rely on it for updates, announcements, and support. If the app is banned, it could disrupt communication for blockchain projects and digital asset users. The Philippines is one of the most active crypto markets in Southeast Asia, which makes the possible impact even bigger.

The DICT is working with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to fight cybercrime. Any ban would also need coordination with telecom regulators and internet service providers, similar to restrictions already placed on unregistered crypto exchanges.

For now, Telegram remains available in the Philippines. But officials have made it clear that if the platform continues to be used for illegal activities, a ban is on the table.
