DOJ, DICT, PCO team up to fight fake news online

The Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and Presidential Communications Office (PCO) have signed a memorandum of agreement to take on fake news and digital disinformation in the Philippines.

The agreement sets clear responsibilities. The PCO will lead in information dissemination, the DOJ will handle legal enforcement, and the DICT will provide technical support through monitoring systems and cybersecurity tools.

Officials highlighted the growing risks of online disinformation, including AI‑generated deepfakes and manipulated media.

Officials warned that false information can destabilize communities, while stressing the importance of protecting freedom of speech and the press. They also emphasized the need for citizen reporting tools and stronger cybersecurity measures to detect and counter harmful content.

The initiative builds on earlier campaigns such as “Oplan Kontra Fake News,” which partnered with national broadsheets to raise awareness.

On April 12, the Philippine government asked Meta to take stronger steps against disinformation and fake news on Facebook and other platforms. The new agreement between the DOJ, DICT, and PCO shows a clear commitment to addressing the spread of false information online.
