PH government urges Meta to act against fake news on Facebook

The Philippine government has formally asked Meta to take stronger action against disinformation and fake news on Facebook and other platforms.

On April 10, 2026, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) sent a joint letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Officials said false posts about oil prices, economic disruptions, and government policies are spreading panic and hurting public confidence.

The agencies explained that disinformation is more than just misleading content. It can distort market prices, encourage hoarding, and even lead to violations of the Price Act, which penalizes profiteering and price manipulation.

The letter listed several measures Meta should implement immediately. These include faster detection and removal of high‑risk content, a 24/7 coordination channel with Philippine authorities, clear escalation protocols, and regular transparency reports on enforcement.

Meta was asked to confirm receipt of the letter within 48 hours and submit a detailed compliance plan within seven days. The government also warned that failure to act could result in regulatory or legal action.
