Amazon’s satellite internet project Amazon Leo is preparing to enter the Philippine market as early as 2026. The move comes after Starlink’s arrival in 2023, taking advantage of Filipinos’ growing interest in satellite-based internet.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) confirmed that Amazon has filed regulatory applications. DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said the entry is supported by the Konektadong Pinoy law, which makes it easier for new telcos to set up operations in the country.
Amazon Leo is expected to benefit from Amazon’s planned acquisition of Globalstar, a satellite operator that enables direct-to-device services. This will allow users to connect directly to satellites without relying on traditional cell towers, similar to Starlink’s model.
Government officials welcome more players in the market, noting that competition could improve service quality and lower costs for consumers. Local government units are also exploring partnerships to build towers and expand fiber networks to complement satellite services.

Challenges remain, including geopolitical risks that could delay some telco projects. Still, the DICT expects more providers to enter the market, strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.
