realme 16 Pro+ 5G review: Surprising where it counts

realme has launched the realme 16 Series 5G in the Philippines, with several models covering the mid-range segment. For this review, we’re taking a closer look at the top-end variant — the realme 16 Pro+ 5G.

At ₱43,999 for the 12GB+512GB model, the price drew mixed reactions. On paper, though, the 16 Pro+ packs serious hardware that looks ready to back it up. The real question is: does it really deliver enough to justify the tag? Let’s dive in.

Design & Display

The realme 16 Pro+ 5G is a real head turner. Our unit comes in the Master Gold colorway, featuring the “Urban Wild” design by Naoto Fukasawa. The back is made from bio‑based silicone, giving it a soft faux leather finish that feels premium in the hand.

The frame is made of metal with a glossy finish, while the camera module sports a nanoscale coating that adds a bit of flair and helps protect against sweat and rain. In the hand, the phone feels solid and well‑built, easily on par with flagship devices.

Up front, you’ll find a 6.8‑inch curved AMOLED display with 2800×1280 resolution, a smooth 144Hz refresh rate, and 10‑bit color depth, meaning it can show up to 1.07 billion colors. Brightness peaks at 6,500 nits, so outdoor visibility is excellent even under direct sunlight.

The bezels are slim at just 1.48mm, giving the phone a 94% screen‑to‑body ratio. It’s also Netflix HDR certified, which we tested and confirmed. Colors look vibrant, blacks are deep, and visuals are sharp, perfect for streaming or gaming.

For durability, the phone has an IP69K rating, giving it full dust protection and resistance to high‑pressure, high‑temperature water jets. It also comes with Gorilla Glass 7i to help guard the screen against scratches and drops.

Beyond the display, the 16 Pro+ packs dual speakers for good audio and a fast, responsive in‑display fingerprint scanner for security.

Performance & Battery

The realme 16 Pro+ 5G delivers solid performance with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor. Our review unit came with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, running on realme UI 7 (Android 16). The interface feels clean, navigation is smooth, and it comes with a handful of useful features.

Like many Chinese phones, the 16 Pro+ comes with some pre‑installed bloatware that slows down the initial setup. Luckily, you can uninstall or disable the apps you don’t need. Left unchecked, they take up space, add background processes, and can drain the battery or push unwanted notifications.

In everyday use, though, the 16 Pro+ feels fast and responsive. Multitasking, browsing, and media playback were all smooth during our review. Gaming performance is also solid. Most titles run well at default or high graphics settings.

For longevity, realme promises 4 years of major updates and 6 years of security patches, which means the phone will stay secure until 2031.

Benchmark scores confirm our experience:

  • AnTuTu Benchmark v11: 1,409,056
  • Geekbench 6:  1,308 single-core / 3,934 multi-core
  • 3DMark Wild Life:  7,747

Battery Life & Charging

The realme 16 Pro+ 5G packs a 7000mAh battery with 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging, plus reverse charging and bypass charging. Bypass charging lets the phone draw power directly from the charger, reducing strain on the battery during long gaming or streaming sessions.

There’s no wireless charging support, which isn’t unusual for mid‑range phones. Despite the huge battery, the 16 Pro+ stays slim at 8.49mm.

In our review, endurance was excellent. With regular to heavy use that includes a mix of streaming, social media, messaging, and browsing, it easily lasted a full day.

In the PCMark Work 3.0 Battery Life test, the 16 Pro+ clocked 17 hours and 23 minutes. The test was run at around 80% brightness, muted volume, adaptive refresh rate, and airplane mode enabled.

Battery life can be stretched by lowering brightness, limiting background apps, or switching to a slower refresh rate, all of which add more hours on top.

Charging is quick: going from 12% to 100% took about 70 minutes in our tests. As a bonus, reverse charging lets the phone power accessories, effectively doubling as a power bank.

Cameras

The realme 16 Pro+ 5G features a triple‑camera setup: a 200MP main sensor with OIS, a 50MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom, and an 8MP ultra‑wide lens. Up front, you’ll find a 50MP selfie camera tucked into a small hole‑punch cutout.

Overall, the cameras deliver sharp, vibrant images. In demanding environments like the Panagbenga Festival and the Igorot Stone Kingdom, we saw high dynamic range and consistent colors, thanks to realme’s LumaColor algorithm.

The system resolves fine textures, from hair strands in portrait bokeh to the intricate stonework in Baguio, punching well above its mid‑range price point.

While it captures professional‑grade detail, it doesn’t quite match the raw sensor scale or polished post‑processing of premium flagships like the Galaxy S26 Ultra or iPhone 17 Pro. Still, the telephoto lens stands out.

Top‑tier flagships still lead in extreme low‑light clarity and advanced video stabilization. Even so, the 16 Pro+ offers a near‑flagship photography experience that can handle almost any scenario.

Night Mode

In low‑light, noise and exposure are well managed, preserving atmosphere in night shots and misty landscapes without blowing out highlights.

Selfies

Selfies look good too, with natural skin tones, sharpening that isn’t overdone, and little of the heavy smoothing often seen in this range.

Closing Remarks

The realme 16 Pro+ 5G is a solid choice in the crowded mid‑range space. It stands out with a sleek design, a huge battery, and cameras that deliver near‑flagship quality.

Performance from the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is more than enough for most users, while the long update policy ensures the phone will stay secure and relevant for years.

The main drawback is the price. At this range, it faces tough competition from Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Nothing. Still, if camera performance is high on your priority list, the realme 16 Pro+ 5G deserves a spot on your shortlist.
