Intel’s Project Firefly takes aim at Apple’s MacBook Neo

Apple’s MacBook Neo shook up the laptop market, putting pressure on both Windows makers and Intel. In response, Intel is rolling out Project Firefly, an effort to deliver more affordable laptops powered by its new Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” CPUs. The approach borrows from the smartphone industry, using standardized parts and modular designs to lower costs and speed up production.

The first Firefly laptop will be the Lenovo Lecoo Air 14, with over 70 designs expected in the first wave. Intel’s reference design shows a slim 11mm profile with a clean look, highlighting the project’s focus on efficiency and portability.

Intel says performance is competitive. The mid-range Core 5 320 CPU reportedly scores 21 percent higher in PassMark than Apple’s A18 Pro chip, though benchmarks should be taken with a grain of salt.

By leaning on China’s smartphone supply chain, Intel hopes to unify OEM designs to make laptops that balance price, performance, and availability.

Project Firefly is clearly aimed at budget-conscious buyers who want modern laptops without leaving the x86 ecosystem. The big question is whether this approach will be enough to challenge Apple’s MacBook Neo and the growing wave of ARM-based laptops.
