Sony has confirmed that starting in January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be released digitally only, ending the production of physical discs. The company said that the move follows player habits, with most gamers now buying and playing digitally.
Games already on disc and those released before 2028 will continue to work and remain supported. Sony said this shift is about keeping up with how players access content today while continuing to invest in new features and experiences.
Reports call this the end of an era, pointing to concerns about game preservation, ownership, and the used-games market. Analysts note that digital adoption has increased, from 13 percent in 2013 to nearly 80 percent by 2025.
