Xbox went down for 16 hours, stopping both disc and online games. The issue came from a failed licensing service outside Xbox that broke sign-ins, game launches, and entitlement checks across three console generations.
The outage hit late Tuesday and spread across Account & Profile, Games & Gaming, Store & Subscriptions, and Apps & Mobile. Most players reported problems launching games. Even disc-based titles failed because licensing checks tied to encrypted packages could not run.
Microsoft fixed the problem by 2:30 PM PDT Wednesday. Xbox said recovery was uneven and that the company will conduct a full review.
The outage was one of the longest in recent years, leaving players frustrated worldwide. Microsoft said the review will examine why a single service failure caused such widespread disruption and why recovery took so long.
Good news — the earlier Xbox issue should now be mitigated. You should once again be able to launch games, sign in, and complete purchases. Thanks for sticking with us through a long one. Let us know if anything still looks off: https://t.co/SoIhwJAdqC https://t.co/IvuWb8tsBT
