Xbox is rolling out a new feature that lets players turn physical disc games into digital games. Starting August 31, 2026, Xbox Insiders can test the disc-to-digital program, giving more flexibility to those with disc collections.
The process is simple. Insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S disc, launch the game, and claim a digital entitlement. Once claimed, the game becomes available digitally across your Xbox ecosystem. This includes Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The disc itself will still work, but resale or lending will no longer be possible unless you give up the digital version.
Thousands of titles are supported at launch, with more to be added over time. Not every game will be available right away, but Microsoft says the goal is long-term confidence that purchased games remain accessible. This also supports Xbox’s push to preserve game libraries as the industry moves toward digital distribution.
Feedback is encouraged through Xbox Player Voice, the Insider Hub, and the official subreddit. Microsoft is positioning this feature as a bridge for players as consoles shift away from discs.

The rollout starts with Insiders, with wider availability expected later. This comes as Sony prepares to end PlayStation disc production by 2028, fully moving to digital releases. Together, these moves show the future of console gaming is digital ownership.
