Microsoft has released the optional Windows 11 KB5101684 update, rolling out at the end of July 2026. The update is available through Windows Update or direct download, with large installer files.
The update improves speed and stability across the system. File Explorer now shows file sizes in KB, MB, and GB, making it easier to read. It also supports middle-click to open folders in new tabs, smoother scrolling in dark mode, and better thumbnails.
Search has been tuned to handle typos better and return more accurate results for apps and settings.
Reliability fixes are also part of the release. The Start menu now remembers pinned apps, explorer.exe runs smoother, and taskbar jump lists are more stable. Low-end PCs should see better performance.
Secure Boot certificates have been unlocked for more devices, with OEM support continuing. Touchpad gestures gain new accelerated scrolling options, while taskbar badges now follow accent colors.
Other tweaks include fewer lock screen widgets, with Weather set as default. Windows Hello now works with external fingerprint sensors. Users can remove the Image Generation AI component if not needed. Energy Saver adds a new threshold setting, and update cleanup has been improved to help performance.

Microsoft warns that optional updates could carry risks, but no major issues have been reported so far. All changes will roll out to everyone in the August 2026 Patch Tuesday release.
