Apple might have just given us an early look at a new iPad mini. A new Smart Folio accessory showed up on Apple’s French regulatory website, and it doesn’t match any current iPad mini case.
The accessory has the model number A3632. Reports say it is different from the Smart Folio cases Apple currently sells for the iPad mini. That has led many to believe it is made for an upcoming model.
The listing is interesting because Apple’s current iPad mini generations use the same Smart Folio design. If the new accessory is real, it could mean Apple is making changes to the tablet’s size or design.
The filing also shows a few changes in the materials used. The new folio reportedly contains at least 3% recycled materials, lower than the 9% used in the current version. It also has a higher amount of rare earth elements.
Some believe the increase in rare earth materials could be linked to changes in the magnetic system that attaches the case to the tablet. Apple has not confirmed that, and the filing itself does not reveal any details about the iPad mini’s hardware.
Even so, this fueled rumors that Apple is getting ready to launch a refreshed iPad mini. Reports linked to the device mention possible upgrades such as an OLED display and improved water resistance, but those details remain unofficial.

For now, the listing is the clearest sign yet that a new iPad mini could be on the way. If you’ve been thinking about getting Apple’s smallest tablet, it might be worth waiting for the company’s next announcement.
