EA shuts down BioWare, ending the run of one of the gaming industry’s best-known RPG studios. The closure comes with job cuts and the cancellation of an early-stage Mass Effect project.
BioWare shared the news on social media and thanked fans for supporting its games over the years. The studio was behind several popular RPG franchises, including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The shutdown is part of wider changes at EA. Reports say the company is cutting about 400 jobs, with around 50 positions coming from BioWare. EA said it is moving people and resources to areas where it sees stronger long-term opportunities.
For many gamers, BioWare helped define story-driven RPGs. Its games built loyal communities and introduced memorable characters and worlds that players followed for years.
Founded in 1995, BioWare grew into one of the most recognized names in role-playing games before EA acquired the studio in 2007. In recent years, however, the company faced a series of challenges, including leadership changes and mixed reactions to some of its newer titles such as Mass Effect: Andromeda, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Anthem.

The closure also brings an end to work on an early Mass Effect project that was still in development. EA has not outlined any plans for the studio following the shutdown.
