An Internet Child Protection Center will be created by the Philippine National Police (PNP) to help protect children from the ill effects of internet use. The creation of the unit is the PNP’s answer to increasing computer-related incidents involving social networking sites. The number of “cybercrimes” dramatically increased due to the growing popularity of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
According to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, a unit inside PNP, it is now seeing internet addiction as a problem. The Internet Child Protection Center unit is seen as a tool that will address internet addiction of children which is often the reason they fall victim to internet predators.
The CIDG said the internet is being used by criminals because it is easy to view profiles of prospects. Facebook is claimed to be social networking site commonly used by criminals, with 83 percent of Internet users having Facebook accounts according to CIDG.
