Samsung Galaxy Beam, an Android Smartphone with HD Projector

An interesting device has just been unveiled at the Mobile World Congress.  Samsung took the lid off a device called Samsung Galaxy Beam, a mobile phone with a built-in projector.  A phone with a projector is quite unique and should be useful to quite a few users.  The Samsung Bean projects HD content including videos, photos and other content.  The Samsung Galaxy Beam even projects games, so you can show off your skills to your friends.

Samsung envisions users projecting content to walls, doors or ceilings at just about any situation.  Users can share content in an office setting, at parties, or at home.  The Samsung Galaxy Beam is rated at an “ultra-bright” 15 lumens.  It projects output as wide as 50 inches.

As to hardware specs, the Samsung Galaxy Beam doesn’t have the best set, but they should be sufficient.  It has a 4-inch display with 800 x 480 resolution, a 1 GHz dual core processor, 5 megapixel back camera and 1.3megapixel front camera, 8GB internal storage expandable via microSD and HSPA+.  Despite integrating an HD projector, the Galaxy Beam still manages to be slim, coming in at 12.5mm.  The battery is rated at 2000 mAh though, which could be insufficient if you use the projector a lot.

The Samsung Galaxy Beam will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread though.  An Ice Cream Sandwich update should be available in the future.  Pricing and availability are still unknown at this point.
