With the launch of the Cherry Mobile Rave, it’s now easy for first time Android users to switch to the platform. For the price of only P3,299, you can get the Android experience, albeit not the best one.
The latest Android version is Android 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean, but Cherry Mobile Rave is stuck at Android 2.3, also known as Gingerbread. Unless you’re not aware, Gingerbread is two versions old since there’s Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich before Jelly Bean. In terms of features and overall speed, Gingerbread is too sluggish compared to Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich. But Gingerbread is still Android, and if your goal is to try it and see how the OS works, Gingerbread should be fine.
As expected from its retail price, the Cherry Mobile Rave doesn’t offer much. I say this only because a thousand pesos more can get you something like the Cherry Mobile Flare which has a much better set of specs. If a thousand more is not too much for you, get the Flare or something similar from another brand with the same specs. If your budget is really tight and you can only get the Rave, you’ll get a set of specs which include a 3.5-inch HVGA display, a 1 GHz single-core processor and a 2-megpixel camera. These specs are very basic and with the kind of apps available now on Android, I can imagine a sluggish performance, especially since the Android version running on the phone is still Gingerbread. It doesn’t help that the internal storage is only 512MB, though it’s expandable up to 32GB. With a 512MB internal storage, the need for a microSD card appears necessary, so you have to take this into consideration if you plan on getting the Cherry Mobile Rave.
The Cherry Mobile Rave has a decent set connectivity options as it offers 3G and HSDPA connectivity as well as Wi-Fi and GPS. The phone is dual-SIM, dual standby, in case you want to know.
