If you’re one of those who bought the first wave of Nokia Lumia phones, the Windows Phone 7.8 update is already available for your devices. The specific phones that will benefit from this update are the Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900. These are the handsets that shipped with Windows Phone 7.5 OS and are not eligible for upgrade to Windows Phone 8.
Windows Phone 7.8 essentially gives the same look as the Windows Phone 8, with the same resizable icons. The Start screen is where the major updates are, with options to use small, medium and large tiles. There’s also the option to use a daily background image from Bing, together with an improved pocket and child lock screen security. In addition, Windows Phone 7.8 brings increased language support.
The Windows Phone 7.8 update will roll out this February. Owners of Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900 will receive notification on their phones informing them if the update is already available for their devices. Delivery of the update is operator dependent, meaning you should receive a notification if you have an unlocked phone or as soon as your operator has approved the update. To ensure that you received the notification, make sure that you have the notifications enabled, or you can manually check for updates.
Once you get the notification to upgrade to Windows Phone 7.8, you need to connect your phone to your computer via Zune for PC or the Windows Phone app for Mac and follow the onscreen instructions. Watch this video on how to update to Windows Phone 7.8.
