Meralco recently announced its first rate drop of the year. For the month of January 2019, cost of electricity rates is down to PHP9.84 per kWh. That’s PHP0.34 per kWh drop from the previous month of PHP10.18 per kWh.
The decrease was because of lower generation charges from Meralco’s Power Supple Agreements (PSAs) with power generation companies. According to Meralco, movements in electricity rates are driven by generation charges which are also pass-through charges.

Among these pass-through charges are transmission charges paid to NGCP, and taxes and other public policy charges that are remitted to the government. Meralco’s distribution, supply, and metering charges, the company claims, have remained unchanged since July 2015.
