Huawei Mate X with foldable display is now official

Huawei’s foldable smartphone, the Mate X, is finally official. The device was announced at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona.

The Mate X features an 8-inch wraparound AMOLED display that folds from the outside via its Falcon Wing mechanical hinge (Imagine the screen as the cover of a book, the hinge is the spine). In tablet or unfolded mode, it has an appearance of, well, a tablet with an almost square 8:7.1 aspect ratio.

On phone mode or when it’s folded, you end up with a dual screen device with displays on both the back and the front of the device. The main display when folded measure 6.6-inches with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a 2480 x 1148 resolution. The rear display measures 6.4-inches with a taller 25:9 aspect ratio and a 2480 x 892 resolution.

On one side, there’s a thick bar which acts as a grip and houses the three Leica cameras, the LED flash, and a button that locks the screens in place when folded.

As for its internals, the Mate X has an octa-core HiSilicon 980 chipset with their latest Balong 5000 5G modem. Paired with the processor are 8GB RAM and 512GB storage, with an option to expand via Huawei’s NM cards.

As for the battery, it has a large 4,500mAh capacity.  There’s no telling how long it will last with such a huge display, though. But it does have 55W SuperCharge that can give it 85% in 30 minutes. It also has fingerprint scanner on the side power button.
