New law gives students 20% discount on fares for public transportation

Hooray for student discounts! President Rodrigo Duterte recently signed into law the Student Fare Discount Act or Republic Act No. 11314 on July 15, 2019.

If you’re a student, here’s what you need to know about RA 11314:

  • Under RA 11314, only currently enrolled elementary to college students are eligible to get the 20% discount on fares of all types of land, air and sea transportation services.
  • The student discount is applicable when taking PUVs like buses, jeepneys, taxis, tricycles, and the MRT and LRT, as well as transport network vehicle services (TVNS) like Grab plus all domestic travel through airlines and passenger ships.
  • To avail, you need only show a couple of things — you’re valid school ID or enrolment form, and a government-issued ID like a driver’s license, passport, SSS ID, Voter’s ID, or a Digitized Postal ID.

If, for whatever reason, you’re denied the discount, you can file a complaint with the LTFRB and the Department of Transportation for land transportation, the Civil Aeronautics Board for air, and the Maritime Industry Authority for sea and water.

Take note that you can get the 20% discount even during weekends and holidays.
