Smart rolls out Voice-over-WiFi service

Smart Communications is rolling out the Voice-over-WiFi (VoWiFi ) or Wi-Fi calling service. It will be initially available to Smart Signature and Smart Infinity subscribers.

Smart’s VoWiFi service will be available on the following devices: Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and Huawei P30 series, Samsung S20 series, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung Galaxy A series, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and newer, Galaxy S8 and newer, Samsung Galaxy Fold, and the TCL PLEX T780H.

VoWiFi or Wi-Fi Calling lets subscribers make and receive phone calls and text messages over their Wi-Fi connection using their smartphones. Calls are made using the dialer.

VoWiFi calls are charged against the subscriber’s plan. For those without an active subscription, local and international voice and text rates will apply.

High-definition call quality will be experienced when both caller and receiving party are on VoWiFi.

Smart also recently activated Voice over LTE (VoLTE) across its LTE sites in Metro Manila. VoLTE is the first, fully IP based carrier grade voice service and uses LTE/4G to transmit voice calls. This is unlike the current setup, where users shift from the 4G network to 2G or 3G mobile networks in order to make a voice call.
