Huawei P40, P40 Pro now official: 50MP main cam, Kirin 990 5G

Huawei announces the Huawei P40 and the Huawei P40 Pro. The handsets were launched via live stream and features the latest mobile cameras from Leica, the Huawei AppGallery, and a new virtual assistant.

Huawei P40 Pro

The Huawei P40 Pro takes off where the Mate 30 Pro and P30 Pro left off. The smartphone comes with three rear cameras consisting of a 50MP main, a 40MP ultra-wide, and a 12MP telephoto, supported by a 3D Time of Flight (ToF) sensor and a color temperature sensor.

The 50MP Ultra Vision Wide main camera is backed by a large 1/1.28″ sensor with an OCTA Phase Detection AF, OIS, and a f/1.9 aperture lens. The 40MP Cine Lens camera, on the other hand, has an 18mm f/1.8 ultra-wide angle lens.

The 12MP SuperSensing telephoto camera has a f/3.4 aperture lens and OIS. It uses a periscope design with up to 5x zoom.

The P40 Pro’s selfie camera is housed in a pill-shaped notch with a 32MP sensor with an IR depth sensor. It can also has autofocus with the capability to shoot 4K videos at 60fps .

Up front is a 6.58-inch OLED display Huawei calls “Overflow Display.” It has four curved edges with the display overflowing at all sides to meet the frame. It has the aforementioned pill shaped notch, a 90Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+ support.

The phone is powered by an octa-core Kirin 990 5G processor made using the 7nm+ process, 8GB RAM, and 256GB or 512GB storage. It has a 4,200mAh battery with a 40W fast wireless charging support, EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10, and Huawei Mobile Services.

And finally, the P40 Pro also comes with IP68 dust and water resistance.

The price of the Huawei P40 Pro starts at EUR 1,000 (around PHP 55,800) for the 8GB + 256GB model.

Huawei P40

The Huawei P40 is a similar device minus the pro features, meaning it has a smaller 60Hz display, RAM, storage, a different set of cameras, and a smaller battery.

The P40 has a smaller 6.1-inch OLED display with flat beveled panel, a full HD resolution and “just” 60Hz refresh rate. It comes with 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS storage.

As for the cameras, you have the 50MP Ultra Vision main camera with large 1/1.28″ sensor. While the secondary cameras include a 16MP ultra-wide and an 8MP telephoto with up to 3x optical zoom. The front camera has an identical 32MP sensor with IR.

Like the P40 Pro, the P40 is powered by a Kirin 990 5G chip with 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. It has an EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10, and Huawei Mobile Services. You also get a smaller 3,800mAh battery with no wireless charging and a 22.5W wireless charging.

The Huawei P40 is priced at EUR 799 (PHP 44,600).

EMUI 10, Huawei Mobile Services, Hey Celia

The Huawei P40 series come with new software features as well. There’s MeeTime voice and video calling app. It has 1080p resolution and screen sharing.

They also have a new voice assistant named Celia. Triggered by the words “Hey Celia,” you can issue commands for things like making calls and creating reminders.

With EMUI 10 and Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) on board to replace Google’s, the Huawei P40 series come with the AppGallery, along with its own apps such as the improved Huawei Video, Huawei Music and Huawei Wallet.

Huawei’s app ecosystem has grown considerably with 1.3 million developers working on porting apps over to their side, and over 400 million active users in over 190 countries and regions.

With new partners for videos and music announced, it looks like the HMS is heading towards the right direction.
