Minecraft’s Steve and Alex get updated designs

Mojang has updated Minecraft’s Steve and Alex skins. Minecraft has been around for 13 years. The latest update to the default skins adds more detail and 3D layers to each character.

The changes are subtle, but it’s definitely there. Steve got his beard back, which was removed back in 2009 to make the character more gender neutral. Meanwhile, Alex, released in 2014, adds textured pixels for more detail. Both characters have 3D layers added to them, but it’s more noticeable on Alex’s hair and ponytail.

Interestingly, Steve has always sported a beard in Minecraft’s artwork and other promotional materials. And for those asking, Alex is said to be a gender-neutral character with more feminine traits.

At this point, it feels like Minecraft has been around for years. The game launched in 2009, and has since been getting updates that improved gameplay and graphics, and added new characters, mobs, and blocks.
