Hands-on with Acer’s Swift Edge 16: 120Hz display, AMD Zen 4 processor

This was, for me at least, another one of those good surprises at the convention.

Acer unveiled the Swift Edge 16 at Computex 2023, along with the Predator Triton 16 and the eco-friendly Connect Vero W6m router.

After trying out the Predator Helios 3D 15 SpatialLabs Edition at the Acer booth, I quickly turned my attention to the refreshed Swift Edge 16. It was, for me at least, another one of those good surprises at the convention.

The updated Acer Swift Edge 16 is one of the lightest 16-inch laptops at the moment, weighing just 1.23 kg or 2.71 lbs. For its size, you can easily lift the device with one hand (which caught me by surprise at how feather-light it felt).

Despite this, the chassis was solid and robust. It felt durable with almost no flex as I waved the 16-inch laptop in the air. I also lifted the lid with just one finger which passed with flying colors as the hinge felt smooth and the laptop stayed on the table.

The new model one-ups the previous generation with a series of upgrades. This one is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor, a new chip based on the Zen 4 architecture with cores boasting boost speeds of up to 5.1GHz. It also has an AMD Radeon 780M GPU based on RDNA3 architecture, and Ryzen AI, a dedicated engine that helps bring new AI experiences to the device.

The Swift Edge 16 also brings an upgraded display with a 3.2K OLED panel that boasts a 120Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, and 0.2 ms response time. This made navigating the laptop a very smooth experience. The display is also certified by VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 and Eyesafe for enhanced contrast and reduced eye strain.

Connectivity was also upgraded. The Swift Edge 16 is one of the first laptops to support Wi-Fi 7 with speeds of up to 5.8Gbps and ultra-low latency of under 2 ms. It also comes with a full-sized keyboard and a range of essential connectivity ports, including two USB Type-A ports, dual USB 4 Type-C PD 65W ports with fast charging and display capabilities, HDMI 2.1, and a MicroSD card reader.

Acer’s Swift Edge 16 definitely makes the premium gaming laptop segment more exciting. According to the company, the exact specifications, prices, and availability will vary by region. For more on Acer Swift Edge 16, you can visit their site here.
