MMDA suspends number coding scheme on Christmas and New Year’s day

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Friday that it will suspend the implementation of the expanded number coding scheme on the following dates this holiday season:

  • Monday, December 25, Christmas Day
  • Tuesday, December 26
  • Monday, January 1, 2024, New Year’s Day

The suspension of the number coding scheme, which bans vehicles from major roads based on the last digit of their license plates, aims to ease the travel of motorists and commuters during the festive period.

The MMDA reminded motorists to plan their trips ahead and check the traffic situation through its social media accounts and website.

The MMDA implements the number codiung scheme, officially called the Unified Vehicle Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP), to reduce traffic congestion in Metro Manila. It usually bans vehicles from major roads based on the last digit of their license plates, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday, except on holidays and weekends.

The scheme disallows vehicles with license plates ending with 1 and 2 on Mondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays, 7 and 8 on Thursdays, and 9 and 0 on Fridays.
