The show is a live-action reimagining of the beloved animated series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. The original series won multiple awards and garnered a loyal fan base for its compelling story, rich world-building, and diverse representation. It also spawned a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, and several comics and novels.
The Netflix adaptation is created by Albert Kim, who also serves as the showrunner and writer. The executive producers are Jabbar Raisani and Michael Goi, who are also known for their work on Lost in Space and Stranger Things. The directors are Roseanne Liang and Jet Wilkinson, who have directed episodes of The Umbrella Academy and How to Get Away with Murder.
It will have eight episodes, running at around one hour each. The show also features a diverse cast of actors. Besides Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ousley, and Kim, the show also stars Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, and Tsai Chin as Gran Gran.
