The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is enforcing a price freeze on essential goods in Metro Manila and Batangas following their declaration under a state of calamity due to Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon habagat.
The measure, implemented effective immediately, aims to shield consumers from unfair price hikes during this crisis.
Under the Price Act, necessities like bread, canned goods, bottled water, milk, instant noodles, coffee, salt, soap, detergent, and candles are automatically subject to a price freeze at their pre-calamity levels for up to 60 days.
The DTI is actively monitoring supermarkets and groceries to ensure compliance. Businesses found violating the price freeze, including those engaging in profiteering and hoarding, face penalties that may include imprisonment.
Hotels and transient accommodations are also warned against “price gouging” or unreasonable price increases. Local government units are likewise urged to be vigilant in protecting consumer rights.
If you encounter instances of overpricing and similar violations, report them via the DTI Consumer Care Hotline 1-DTI (384) or email consumercare@dti.gov.ph.
