The Philippines has moved up in the 2024 United Nations Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) from the 61st spot in 2020 to 53rd place.
According to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Philippines’ cybersecurity score surged to 93.49 points, which moved the country from Tier 3 to Tier 2. Moreover, this puts the nation within striking distance of Tier 1, a category reserved for countries with the best cybersecurity practices.
DICT credits the Philippines’ rise to Tier 2 to improvement in key areas, including the development of technical skills, international cooperation, organizational efficiency, and capacity building.
The agency also credits the government’s focus on strengthening cybersecurity through the National Cybersecurity Plan (NCSP) 2023-2028.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., solidified the government’s dedication to cybersecurity in April 2024 by signing Executive Order No. 58, which mandated all government agencies to adopt NCSP 2023-2028, establishing a unified framework for safeguarding the nation’s digital assets and mitigating cyber threats.
