Smart Communications is working with US-based Lynk Global to bring mobile connectivity to places without signal. The service will start with basic SMS messaging, using satellites to connect directly to regular mobile phones.
This setup is called Direct-to-Device (D2Dm), which lets people send texts and use select apps like WhatsApp even when cell towers aren’t available. It can help communities stay connected during emergencies, like typhoons and earthquakes.
Smart will begin with lab tests and field trials, linking its systems with Lynk’s satellite network. The rollout will focus on remote coastal and mountain areas, as well as key sea routes. The goal is to provide stable, secure connections where they’re needed most.
