Apple could soon see a leadership change that could reshape the company’s future. Reports say Tim Cook may step down as chief executive as early as next year, ending a run that began in 2011 when he succeeded Steve Jobs.
Cook has guided Apple through years of record profits and global expansion. He also oversaw a shift toward outsourced manufacturing, which allowed Apple to scale faster than ever before. At the same time, his tenure has drawn criticism over labor practices and the company’s dominance in consumer tech.
The board is preparing for succession. John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, is widely viewed as the leading candidate.
The speculation follows the retirement of longtime chief operating officer Jeff Williams, a move that triggered changes across Apple’s leadership team. The company prefers internal successors, and they likely have detailed succession plans ready.

If Cook steps down, his successor will inherit a company at the center of global technology. Apple continues to dominate smartphones and services, but the next CEO will face new challenges in artificial intelligence, regulation, and shifting consumer demand.
