Crucial to be retired as Micron shifts to AI

Crucial products will still be available in stores until February 2026.

Micron Technology is retiring its Crucial consumer memory brand as it shifts its attention to chips built for AI. According to the company, Crucial products will still be available in stores and online only until February 2026.

The move comes as global supply shortages continue to affect semiconductors. Micron explained that moving away from consumer memory will let it focus on bigger customers and faster-growing markets. In short, the company wants to put more resources into advanced memory used in AI data centers.

One area Micron is betting on is high-bandwidth memory, or HBM. HBM is a type of dynamic random access memory designed to process large volumes of data efficiently.

By stacking chips vertically, HBM reduces power consumption while boosting performance, making it critical for AI workloads. Micron has been investing heavily in this segment, competing with Samsung and SK Hynix.

Analysts noted that Crucial was never a big part of Micron’s overall business, so the exit is more about strategy than financial loss. Still, the brand has been familiar to many consumers for years, making the move notable.
