Google is rolling out new upgrades to Google Translate, powered by its latest Gemini models. The update improves text translation quality, adds a beta version of live speech translation, and expands the app’s language learning tools.
The new system delivers more natural results. It handles idioms, slang, and context more effectively, avoiding literal translations that can lead to mistranslations. The update is now available in the United States and India for English and nearly 20 other languages on the app and the web.
Google is also testing a live speech-to-speech translation feature. It sends real-time translations straight to a user’s headphones. The system keeps the speaker’s tone and cadence, making conversations sound more natural. It works for travel, lectures, and media in other languages. The beta is available on Android in the United States, Mexico, and India, and supports more than 70 languages. Google plans to bring it to iOS and more countries in 2026.
The Translate app’s learning tools are getting an update as well. Users now get clearer feedback during speaking practice. A new streak counter tracks daily progress. Google is also adding more language pairs and expanding availability to nearly 20 new countries.
