Experts warn Filipinos of silent cybersecurity surveillance

Kaspersky has issued a warning to Filipinos about silent cyber surveillance linked to the HoneyMyte APT group. The advanced persistent threat (APT) has upgraded its malware, making it harder to detect and more dangerous for individuals and organizations.

The group’s latest tool, called the CoolClient backdoor, can monitor clipboard activity, track active windows, and steal proxy credentials. It also uses a method known as DLL side-loading, which hides malicious code inside legitimate software. This makes detection more difficult and increases the risk of long-term data theft.

Recent campaigns have targeted countries such as Myanmar, Mongolia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Russia, focusing on government agencies. While the Philippines has not been directly named, experts warn that the country is vulnerable due to its growing reliance on digital payments, remote work, and online government services.

For everyday users, the threat means personal accounts and sensitive data could be exposed. Businesses face risks to customer trust and financial security. Government agencies are at risk of espionage and intelligence loss.
