nubia Neo 5 GT 5G review: Strong gaming, budget‑friendly price

Every once in a while, a phone comes along that surprises you (in a good way). For us, that’s the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G. This budget mid-range gaming phone packs a punch with features borrowed from RedMagic.

Starting at ₱17,999, the Neo 5 GT 5G brings a 144Hz OLED display, a capable chipset, and gaming extras such as Neo Triggers and a built‑in cooling fan, aiming to deliver smooth performance at an affordable price.

The question is: Does the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G have enough to meet the needs of gamers looking for more value? Let’s find out.

Design & Display

The Neo 5 GT 5G has a bold gaming look. It’s not garish, but you’ll know who it’s built for. It uses nubia’s Hero Eye design with a robot‑like eye at the back, giving it a sleek finish despite the plastic build. The phone feels surprisingly solid in hand.

On the right side are capacitive shoulder triggers, a volume rocker, and a red‑textured power button. Two vents house the cooling fans, while RGB lights add to the gaming aesthetic.

The power button sits slightly lower than usual to make way for the vents. It caused mispresses on my part, though you get used to it quickly.

Up front, you’ll find a 6.8‑inch flat AMOLED display with 2392×1080 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. Brightness peaks at 4,500 nits, which offers excellent outdoor visibility.

The screen also has a 3049Hz instant touch sampling rate, making taps and inputs feel more responsive, especially during gameplay.

Bezels are thin, with the bottom slightly thicker than the rest. Colors are vibrant and oversaturated, blacks are deep, and visuals are sharp. Combined with the expansive screen, you have a great display for gaming and streaming.

The Neo 5 GT 5G also packs dual speakers and an in‑display fingerprint scanner. Audio is loud with decent highs, but the lows are a bit thin, and max volume can cause a slight distortion. They are not deal breakers, but worth noting.

Performance

The nubia Neo 5 GT 5G runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 processor with 12GB RAM (plus 12GB extended RAM) and 512GB storage. It ships with MyOS based on Android 16, offering a clean interface and smooth navigation.

Unsurprisingly, there’s a fair amount of pre‑installed bloatware. I recommend that you uninstall or disable what you don’t need. Leaving them unchecked can eat up space, add background processes, and drain the battery. nubia says to expect 2 years of major updates and up to 5 years of security patches.

In everyday use, the phone feels fast and responsive. Gaming performance is strong, with most titles running well at default or high settings.

I really enjoyed using it for Call of Duty Mobile (CODM). It maxed out the graphics (set at Very High), and the refresh rate was set to Max. Gameplay was responsive, and the Neo Triggers were satisfying to use.

The device also includes AI Game Space 5.0, a hub for managing performance modes, notifications, and system monitoring during gameplay. It’s pretty straightforward to use.

The built‑in cooling fan keeps temperatures stable, and the effect is noticeable. You’ll also hear it running, especially when you’re in a quiet room, but it’s soft enough not to be distracting.

One issue I encountered was a pesky toast message (“Touch button turned on”) that popped up from time to time during CODM. It blocked the crosshairs. Activating false touch prevention fixes this, but I suggest you turn it off afterward to avoid blocking double swipes to exit games.

nubia neo 5 gt 5g benchmark scores

Benchmark scores back up my impressions:

  • AnTuTu Benchmark v11.1: 1,062,137
  • Geekbench 6:  1,069 single-core / 3,263 multi-core
  • 3DMark Wild Life:  3,867

Battery & Charging

The Neo 5 GT 5G is equipped with a 6,210mAh battery and 80W fast charging. It includes bypass charging and a 90‑degree USB‑C cable, which keeps the cord out of the way when gaming while plugged in.

Endurance is good. With regular to heavy use that includes streaming, social media, messaging, and gaming, it lasts a full day.

In the PCMark Work 3.0 Battery Life test, the Neo 5 GT 5G managed 10 hours and 53 minutes. The test was conducted at around 80% brightness, muted volume, adaptive refresh rate, and airplane mode enabled. This works out to around 9 hours and 12 minutes of screen-on time.

Turning on the built‑in fan significantly uses more power, but it does help temperatures under control during gameplay and charging. Just keep this in mind if you want to extend the phone’s battery life.

Charging is quick. A full charge typically takes about 65 minutes in our tests.

Cameras

The Neo 5 GT 5G has a dual‑camera setup with a 50MP main sensor and a 2MP secondary camera, plus a 16MP selfie shooter in a hole‑punch cutout. Bear in mind that cameras aren’t the main focus here.

Image quality is nothing to write home about. The 50MP main camera performs well in bright conditions, with decent detail and natural colors. Zooming in results in loss of sharpness and detail. It’s enough for casual social media posts and everyday shots.

Low‑light performance shows some noise, which is expected at this level. Dynamic range and colors are limited. And there’s no OIS, so you’ll need a steady hand in darker scenes. The selfie camera is reliable, though, with natural results.

Overall, camera quality is okay for a budget gaming phone, but it clearly takes a back seat to performance features like the 144Hz display and built‑in cooling fan.

Closing Remarks

The nubia Neo 5 GT 5G is a strong option for a budget gaming smartphone. Priced at ₱17,999 for the 8GB+256GB model, you’re getting a device that excels at what it’s made for — gaming performance.

It is satisfying to use, with a colorful screen, a sleek design, responsive Neo Triggers, and an effective cooling fan. Put together, and you have one competitive device in its class.

Of course, it’s not without compromises. The cameras perform best in good lighting but lack consistency, and the update policy could be improved.

Even so, the Neo 5 GT 5G is still a practical choice, especially for gamers who want a gaming‑centric phone without breaking the bank.

What we like:

  • Bright, colorful display
  • Good gaming performance
  • Responsive Neo Triggers
  • Effective built-in fan

What we don’t like:

  • So-so cameras
  • Fair amount of bloatware
  • Pesky message during gameplay
  • Limited update policy
