Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the Northern District of California, accusing the AI company of stealing trade secrets and misusing confidential product information.
Apple claims OpenAI encouraged former employees to share proprietary data, such as technical drawings and unreleased product designs, as it aims to develop its own devices.
The lawsuit names Tang Tan, OpenAI’s chief hardware officer and former Apple VP of product design, along with Chang Liu, a former iPhone hardware engineer. Reports say more than 400 Apple employees have joined OpenAI, raising concerns about misappropriation.
The company is demanding a jury trial and wants OpenAI to stop using its trade secrets, destroy any proprietary materials, and redesign upcoming products to exclude Apple technology.
Apple argues that OpenAI’s recruitment of key staff, including former design chief Jony Ive, and its $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products Inc., show a pattern of targeting Apple’s intellectual property.
OpenAI denies the allegations, stating it has no interest in Apple’s trade secrets and remains focused on innovation.
