Meta withdraws Muse Image tool days after launch amid privacy concerns

Meta has withdrawn its Muse Image tool just days after launch, after facing strong backlash. The AI feature, which debuted on July 7, lets users reference public Instagram photos for generative images. It was switched on by default, which means people who don’t want it will need to opt out through privacy settings.

The company said the tool was meant to inspire creativity but admitted it “missed the mark.” Muse Image was discontinued after criticism from actors and public figures, who urged users to deactivate the feature to protect their likenesses.

“Earlier this week, we announced that one way for people to generate images in Meta AI is by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts that they want to reference. Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available,” Meta said in a post.

Concerns centered on privacy, copyright, and image rights. Many criticized Meta for rolling out the tool without proper safeguards, especially since it automatically included public accounts.

The controversy shows the bigger debate around generative AI and user consent. Meta’s quick withdrawal proves it listens to feedback, but it also exposes how tech companies often push out AI features without enough care, only fixing them once users complain.
