Google Assistant will shut down on Android and Wear OS starting September 4, 2026. The change also affects headphones and cars using Android Auto projected from phones, as Google moves users to Gemini.
The shutdown will roll out over several weeks. Devices with Google built-in (Android Automotive) will keep Assistant for now. Gemini will later expand to Google TV, Home speakers, and smart displays, becoming the new AI-powered service across platforms.
Google first planned the transition for late 2025 but pushed it to 2026. The company says Gemini is “more capable and helpful,” aiming to give users a smoother experience. For Android and Wear OS, this means Assistant will stop working, and Gemini will take over in the coming months.

This marks the end of Google Assistant’s long run as the company’s voice AI. Gemini is set to replace it, bringing a new AI experience across devices. For those still using Assistant, Google added a “Switch to Google Assistant” option in the Gemini app to make the move easier.
