Google will limit free users’ access to Gemini starting October 9. Free accounts will get only Flash-Lite, and Pro and Flash models will be removed. Paid plans will also change, with higher tiers gaining new features.
Free Gemini app users will be restricted to the 3.5 Flash-Lite model. They will lose access to 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro. AI Plus subscribers at $4.99 per month will also be limited to Flash-Lite and Flash, with Pro removed. Only AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers keep full access to all models.
Google is adding new features to higher tiers. AI Pro subscribers at $19.99 per month will gain access to Deep Think, a feature previously locked to the $99.99 and $199.99 plans. The Gemini app will also introduce low, medium, and high effort levels for tasks.
Google also announced Gemini 4 Argon, which will first roll out to AI Ultra subscribers. It is not clear if Argon will replace Pro or be added as a new tier.
Many users are frustrated with the frequent changes and loss of Pro access. Some worry Flash-Lite may hallucinate too much, while others are considering alternatives like Claude or OpenAI.

For users, the changes mean fewer options at lower tiers and more advanced features locked behind higher-priced plans. If you rely on Pro access, you may need to upgrade or look at other platforms.
