MMDA tests smart poles and Lakbay Points app for traffic plan

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is testing smart poles and a traffic app with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Both projects are part of the agency’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Development Plan.

Smart poles will be placed at selected intersections to gather traffic and environmental data. The sensors will be tested for accuracy and capability. The goal is to improve monitoring and support faster traffic decisions.

The MMDA is also reviewing a mobile app called Lakbay Points, created by Cagayan State University. The app won the “Bagong Gawi, Bagong Galaw” challenge and is being considered for integration with local government and national systems.

Other projects include improving Waze dashboards, redeveloping the traffic data platform, and building the Road DX System. These tools aim to provide better visualization and support for traffic management.

In the next six months, the MMDA will finalize the ITS Development Plan, roll out the smart pole pilot, and work with the app developers.

MMDA officials said the next step is to validate the ITS plan, endorse priority projects, and prepare pilot initiatives for full operations. The effort is part of the Five-Year Action Plan for Traffic Management (2023–2027).
