Apple’s new CEO John Ternus officially takes over on September 1, 2026, just days before the iPhone 18 launch. He replaces Tim Cook, who moves to executive chairman after 15 years leading the company.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and became senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021. He has overseen major product lines including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Unlike Cook, who focused on operations, Ternus is known for his product and engineering leadership.
His first big test comes on September 9, when he leads Apple’s event expected to unveil the iPhone 18 series and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The foldable model could mark Apple’s entry into a new premium category. Reports also point to other devices in the pipeline, including smart glasses, AirPods with cameras, and a smart home robot.
There are challenges ahead. Ternus needs to rebuild Apple’s design team, set a clear path for Vision Pro, and improve the company’s AI plans. Analysts say Apple lags behind rivals like Google and Microsoft in AI. Supply chain risks in China also remain a big problem.
Outside of products, Ternus must keep Apple fresh and creative. The company built its name on surprise and bold ideas under Steve Jobs, and that reputation is now his to protect.
